Where to look

Look in older forest with a bilberry understorey, and at forest edges beside meadows. Cep and bay boletes stay close to patches of oak and birch. After rain, check forest roads that run along slight rises.

What grows here

bay bolete (podgrzybek brunatny), penny bun / cep (prawdziwek), slippery jack (maślak zwyczajny), chanterelle (kurka), saffron milk cap (rydz)

Forest: pine forest on sand, with oak and birch on damper soils

Season: Mushrooms start in July with chanterelles. The main flush of bay boletes and cep runs from August to October.

Rules

In the west, around Żagań and Świętoszów, there are military training areas. Do not enter if you see a no-entry sign. In a drought the forest can be temporarily closed because of fire risk.

About the forest

Bory Dolnośląskie (the Lower Silesian Forest) is one of the largest continuous forest complexes in Poland, between Bolesławiec, Lubin and Żagań. Pine dominates and the soils are sandy. Pickers come from both Lower Silesia and the Lubusz region.
