Where to look

Look in older pine stands with moss and bilberry. Young pine thickets give slippery jacks and saffron milk caps, while mature forest gives bay boletes and cep. Check the edges of forest tracks and slight rises, where the sand dries faster.

What grows here

penny bun / cep (prawdziwek), bay bolete (podgrzybek brunatny), slippery jack (maślak zwyczajny), chanterelle (kurka), saffron milk cap (rydz)

Forest: pine forest on sandy soils, with some spruce and birch

Season: On sandy soils mushrooms appear quickly after rain, but they also dry out quickly. The main season runs from August to October.

Rules

Picking mushrooms is banned inside Bory Tucholskie National Park (Park Narodowy Bory Tucholskie). There are also many nature reserves nearby, and signs mark their boundaries. In a drought the local forester can temporarily close the forest to visitors.

About the forest

Bory Tucholskie (the Tuchola Forest) is one of the largest continuous forest complexes in Poland. Pine dominates on sandy ground. It lies between Chojnice, Tuchola and Czersk, and there is so much forest that you can lose your bearings without a map.
