Where to look

Search south-facing slopes at canyon mouths, in oakbrush and along game trails. Mule deer sheds are smaller, so walk slowly and look under bushes.

Species

elk (wapiti), mule deer, moose

Season: Mule deer shed from January to March, elk from March to April. Search from March to May.

Terrain: Uinta-Wasatch-Cache National Forest: maple, oakbrush and sagebrush slopes

Rules and closures

From January 1 to May 31, Utah requires you to carry a certificate from the free Antler Gathering Ethics Course (Utah DWR). The certificate does not open closed areas or private land. In a harsh winter the DWR director can close shed collecting statewide.

About the area

Logan lies in Cache Valley at the foot of the Bear River Mountains. Mule deer and elk winter on the slopes above the valley, and moose turn up in the canyons. Much of the land is Uinta-Wasatch-Cache National Forest.
