Where to look

Search south-facing slopes above the valleys, near springs and on game trails leading down from the ridges. After a hard winter animals come lower, so sheds lie closer to the valley floor.

Species

elk (wapiti), mule deer

Season: Mule deer shed from January to March, elk from March to April. Idaho advises waiting until animals have left winter range.

Terrain: Salmon-Challis National Forest and BLM land: sagebrush, pine, steep valleys

Rules and closures

Since July 1, 2024 non-residents need a valid Idaho hunting license (not a small game license) to search for and possess sheds. Idaho Fish and Game announces seasonal winter range closures, so check them before you go. Do not chase or harass animals.

About the area

The Salmon and Lemhi river valleys are elk and mule deer winter range. Around the town of Salmon there is plenty of BLM land and Salmon-Challis National Forest. The country is steep and dry, so sheds show well.
