Where to stand

Leave the car at the car park at the foot of the dune and climb the stairs and boardwalks to the terrace by the sundial. Look north over the forest. Nida glows to the north-west, so stand on the east side of the terrace, above the lagoon.

View towards the pole

An all-round view from the dune: Nida and forest to the north-west, the Curonian Lagoon to the east

Sky darkness (Bortle scale): 3

Rules and safety

The dune is in the Parnidis Landscape Reserve within Curonian Spit National Park, and you may walk only on the marked paths. South of the dune are areas closed to visitors, and further on the border with the Kaliningrad region, which you must not approach. Cars entering the spit pay an ecological fee.

About the spot

The Parnidis Dune is about 52 m high and lies just south-east of Nida on the Curonian Spit. A granite sundial stands on the top. The geomagnetic latitude is the same as at Jastrzębia Góra in Poland, about 54°, so the aurora shows low in the north only in strong storms.

Do not miss the next window
