Where to stand
Park at the viewpoint car park and walk the walkway to the end of the headland. The peaks are to the north and the open sea to the west. At a geomagnetic latitude of about 67.6°, also look up to the zenith, because the aurora is often overhead.
View towards the pole
Open sea to the west, and to the north the jagged Okshornan peaks across the fjord
Sky darkness (Bortle scale): 2
Rules and safety
The walkway is slippery with frost and ice, and beyond the railing the rocks drop straight into the sea. The toilets are open only from May to October, and emptying motorhome toilets is not allowed here. Do not leave the car on the road outside the car park.
About the spot
Tungeneset is a viewpoint on the National Tourist Route Senja, on a headland between Steinsfjorden and Ersfjorden. A larch walkway leads out over the rocks above the sea. Across the water stand the sharp peaks of Oksen (Okshornan), and the aurora often crosses the whole sky above them.
