Where to look

Drive to the car park at Knudeklint on the north-west coast of the island. Search the beach below the cliff for flat pieces of moler and hard concretions that may hold fish or insects. Visit the Fur Museum first so you know what typical finds look like.

What you can find

fish, insects, plant remains

Best wind: NW, N, W

Rules and safety

The cliff is protected: nothing may be taken from the face, and fossils may be collected only on the beach. Stay on the paths. Exceptional finds are danekræ and must be handed to a museum, for example the Fur Museum.

About the cliff

Fur is an island in the Limfjord, and Knudeklint is a cliff of moler: diatomite layered with bands of volcanic ash. The rocks are about 55 million years old and have preserved over 700 species of fish, birds, insects and plants. The cliff is part of the Western Limfjord UNESCO World Heritage Site.
