See the pre-saleWhere to look
Park at Lighthouse Close and use the signed way down to the beach. At low tide, check loose sea-washed pieces of rock. The colour of the rock tells you which bed it came from, and belemnites are easiest to find in the Red Chalk.
What you can find
belemnites, brachiopods, inoceramid bivalves, sea urchins (rare)
Best wind: W, NW, SW
Rules and safety
The cliff is an SSSI. Do not hammer the cliff or the ledges. The beaches may be privately owned, so check the rules for collecting even loose fossils on site or with the Borough Council of King's Lynn and West Norfolk. Rocks fall without warning; keep away from the cliff foot.
About the cliff
Hunstanton is known for its striped cliff: rusty Carstone sandstone, Red Chalk and white chalk on top. The cliff faces west over The Wash. The most common finds are small belemnites and brachiopods from the Red Chalk.
Do not miss the next window
The best windows last a few hours: after a storm, after rain, on a clear night with an active Sun. Sign up and we will email you when the index at your spots goes above 60.
