Where to look

From the promenade car park, walk south-east to the start of the cliffs. Search the shingle and pyrite patches on the firm beach, getting down low. Small teeth and seeds are easy to miss, so go over a small patch carefully.

What you can find

pyritised fruits and seeds, shark teeth, fish vertebrae, crabs (rare)

Best wind: N, NE, NW

Rules and safety

The coast is the Sheppey Cliffs and Foreshore SSSI, and SSSI status does not by itself give permission to collect. Take only loose beach material, do not dig into the cliff and check the rules with the landowner or Natural England. Avoid soft mud and leave before the tide comes in.

About the cliff

Minster is on the north shore of the Isle of Sheppey in the Thames Estuary. Its cliffs of Eocene London Clay are low and erode quickly. They are known for small fossils, above all fruits and seeds of tropical plants preserved in pyrite.

Do not miss the next window

The best windows last a few hours: after a storm, after rain, on a clear night with an active Sun. Sign up and we will email you when the index at your spots goes above 60.
