Where to look

From GeoCenter Møns Klint, walk down the 497 steps to the beach. Search the flint bands and the white chalk debris near the water, best after an easterly storm. In summer, GeoCenter runs daily guided fossil hunts.

What you can find

belemnites, sea urchins, sponges, oysters

Best wind: E, NE, SE

Rules and safety

Picks and other tools are not allowed, so you collect only what you can see on the surface. Exceptional finds are danekræ: they belong to the state and are handed to the Natural History Museum for a small fee. Keep away from the cliff foot and fresh falls.

About the cliff

Møns Klint is a line of white chalk cliffs on the east coast of the island of Møn, over 100 m high. The chalk formed in a shallow sea about 70 million years ago. The cliff keeps falling, and the waves wash the chalk away and leave fossils on the beach.

Do not miss the next window

The best windows last a few hours: after a storm, after rain, on a clear night with an active Sun. Sign up and we will email you when the index at your spots goes above 60.
