Where to look

From the car park by the pub, go down to the beach and walk west towards Golden Cap. Search the shingle and sand patches near the water line, best on a falling tide. Belemnites often lie in fine gravel, so look closely.

What you can find

ammonites, belemnites, crinoids

Best wind: S, SW, SE

Rules and safety

The West Dorset Fossil Collecting Code of Conduct applies. Collect only loose fossils from the beach and do not dig into the cliff. There are active mudslides below Golden Cap and the tide can cut off your return, so keep away from the cliff foot and check tide times.

About the cliff

Seatown is a small hamlet below Golden Cap, the highest cliff on the south coast of England. The same Jurassic beds as at Charmouth reach the beach here, with fewer people. After storms the waves wash ammonites and belemnites out of the slumps.

Do not miss the next window

The best windows last a few hours: after a storm, after rain, on a clear night with an active Sun. Sign up and we will email you when the index at your spots goes above 60.
