Where to stand
The observatory runs paid sky shows, so book a place. On your own, pick the verge of a side road or a viewpoint away from Monsaraz and Reguengos de Monsaraz. Bring water and mosquito repellent.
Horizon
Gentle hills and the lake; the sky is open in almost every direction
Sky darkness (Bortle scale): 2
Rules
Most land around the lake is private grazing land, so do not climb fences. Summer fire risk is high, so do not light fires or drop cigarette ends.
About the spot
The area around Lake Alqueva in Alentejo runs as Dark Sky Alqueva and holds the Starlight Tourism Destination certificate from the Starlight Foundation. This is not a DarkSky International certificate, but the sky is very dark and summer nights are almost always clear. The lakeside observatory is near the medieval village of Monsaraz.
