Where to stand

Park by the loch on the A712 and walk away from the road so passing headlights do not ruin your night vision. Over the water the sky is open to the west and north. Bring a red torch and warm, waterproof clothes.

Horizon

A loch and moorland ringed by forest; over the water the sky is open to the west and north

Sky darkness (Bortle scale): 2

Rules

The Scottish Outdoor Access Code lets you walk on most land if you do so responsibly. After dark stay near the car park and roads, because the ground around is boggy and the weather changes fast.

About the spot

Galloway Forest Park in south-west Scotland became the first Dark Sky Park in the UK in November 2009, straight away at the top gold tier. Clatteringshaws Loch lies by the A712 in the east of the park. The former visitor centre by the loch was bought by the Scottish Dark Sky Observatory, which plans to open there in 2027.
