Where to stand

Park by the observatory on the pass and ask about shows, or stand on the open meadow next to it, away from the buildings. The pass gives a wide view of the sky over the hills around. Check the observatory opening hours before you go.

Horizon

A pass with meadows; open sky, with low wooded ridges around

Sky darkness (Bortle scale): 2

Rules

Poloniny National Park has its own rules, so do not walk the trails at night or camp outside marked sites. Bears and wolves live in the forests, so stay on open ground by the road.

About the spot

The Poloniny Dark Sky Park in eastern Slovakia was set up in December 2010 as the first in the country and borders the Polish Bieszczady. It covers Poloniny National Park, its buffer zone and part of the local municipalities, more than 485 km² in all. An astronomical observatory stands on the Kolonické sedlo pass.
