Where to look

Look in the state forests around Bodenmais, Zwiesel and below the Arber, outside the national park. Cep grows in spruce with moss, chanterelles in open mixed forest. Check the edges of forest roads a few days after rain.

What grows here

penny bun / cep (prawdziwek), chanterelle (kurka), bay bolete (podgrzybek brunatny), orange birch bolete (koźlarz czerwony), honey fungus (opieńka miodowa)

Forest: mountain spruce-beech forest with fir

Season: July–October; peak in September.

Rules

In Germany you may pick mushrooms only in small amounts for personal use (section 39(3) of the Federal Nature Conservation Act, BNatSchG). Cep, chanterelles, birch boletes and morels are protected species, and the exception in section 2 of the Federal Species Protection Ordinance (BArtSchV) allows only small amounts for your own use. In the core zones of the Bavarian Forest National Park entry off the marked trails is banned, so picking there is not possible.

About the forest

The Bavarian Forest is the German side of the same range as the Czech Šumava. The slopes carry spruce-beech forest with fir, and the climate is cool and damp. Outside the national park the state forests are open to mushroom pickers.
