Where to look

Look in oak and mixed woodland in the Mawddach and Eden valleys and on the edges of older plantations along the trails from the visitor centre. Chanterelles grow in moss under oak and birch. Watch out for fast riders on the bike trails.

What grows here

chanterelle (kurka), penny bun / cep (prawdziwek), winter chanterelle (pieprznik trąbkowy), orange birch bolete (koźlarz czerwony), parasol (czubajka kania)

Forest: Douglas fir and spruce plantations with oakwood in the river valleys

Season: August–November; peak in September and October.

Rules

In Wales, as in England, uprooting fungi without the landowner's permission is an offence under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981, and commercial picking needs consent. I found no clear Natural Resources Wales rules for fungi, so pick only small amounts for your own use and read the signs. Do not pick on SSSIs or in nature reserves.

About the forest

Coed y Brenin near Dolgellau is a large state forest in Eryri (Snowdonia) National Park, best known for its mountain bike trails. The wet, oceanic climate of west Wales favours mushrooms all autumn. The forest is managed by Natural Resources Wales.
