Where to look

Morels grow in spring (October to December) in lenga and ñirre beech forest, especially on old burns and forest edges. Look for slippery jacks and saffron milk caps in autumn under plantation pines. Dihueñe (Cyttaria) are edible round fungi that grow on beech branches.

What grows here

morel (smardz), slippery jack (maślak zwyczajny), Jersey cow mushroom (maślak sitarz), saffron milk cap (rydz), beech orange / dihueñe (cyttaria)

Forest: southern beech forest (lenga, ñirre), old burns and pine plantations

Season: October–December for morels; March–May for slippery jacks.

Rules

Most land is private or state-owned, and you need the owner's permission to pick. Picking without permission is banned in reserves and national parks run by CONAF. I did not find rules on limits, so check with CONAF and the landowner.

About the forest

Coyhaique in Chilean Patagonia is an area where morels grow after old fires in southern beech forest. Picking and exporting them is an important income for people in Aysén. In autumn slippery jacks appear in the pine plantations.
