Where to look

Look in pine forest with reindeer lichen and heather around Marcinkonys and Varėna. Cep and bay boletes grow in older forest, slippery jacks and saffron milk caps in young plantations. The sand dries quickly, so go one to two weeks after proper rain.

What grows here

penny bun / cep (prawdziwek), chanterelle (kurka), bay bolete (podgrzybek brunatny), slippery jack (maślak zwyczajny), saffron milk cap (rydz)

Forest: dry pine forest on inland dunes

Season: July–October; peak in September.

Rules

Picking is allowed in the national park outside the reserves, and entry to the Čepkeliai reserve needs a permit. The southern part of the region borders Belarus: keep away from the border strip and carry ID. Protected species from the Lithuanian Red Data Book are off limits.

About the forest

Dzūkija in southern Lithuania is a land of dry pine forest on sand, with Dzūkija National Park at its centre. Varėna calls itself the mushroom capital of Lithuania and holds a mushroom festival every year. Mushroom picking is a traditional source of village income here.
