Where to look

Look in beech and mixed forest around Nettersheim, Blankenheim and Bad Münstereifel. Parasols grow on forest edges and clearings, cep in older beech and spruce. Keep out of young plantations, nurseries and new plantings, where picking is banned.

What grows here

penny bun / cep (prawdziwek), chanterelle (kurka), parasol (czubajka kania), honey fungus (opieńka miodowa), oyster mushroom (boczniak ostrygowaty)

Forest: beech and spruce forest on limestone and slate hills

Season: July–November; peak in September and October.

Rules

Euskirchen district gives a limit of 2 kg per person per day, for your own use only, and commercial picking is banned. Cep, chanterelles, birch boletes and morels may be taken only within this limit, and Caesar's mushroom, the yellow knight and truffles are fully protected. Picking is banned in Eifel National Park and in nature reserves.

About the forest

The Eifel is a range of low mountains in western Germany, on the Belgian border. Euskirchen district has plenty of beech and spruce, and the limestone around Nettersheim gives different species from the acid soils higher up. Part of the range is Eifel National Park.
