Where to look

Look in pine forest on the valley terraces around Sigulda, Līgatne and Cēsis. Chanterelles grow in moss in mixed forest, cep in older pine. The steep sandstone valley sides are prone to slips, so do not take shortcuts down them.

What grows here

chanterelle (kurka), penny bun / cep (prawdziwek), orange birch bolete (koźlarz czerwony), bay bolete (podgrzybek brunatny), saffron milk cap (rydz)

Forest: pine and mixed forest in the Gauja valley

Season: July–October; peak in August and September.

Rules

In state forests (LVM) you may pick mushrooms and berries as you wish, with no quantity limit, but protected species are off limits. Protected areas, including Gauja National Park, may have extra restrictions, so check the LVM GEO map or the signs. Leave your car on the road: driving and parking off-road in the forest are banned.

About the forest

The Gauja valley in Vidzeme is Latvia's best known forest landscape, with Gauja National Park around Sigulda. Pine forest on sand alternates with mixed forest on the valley slopes. Latvians come here mainly for chanterelles and cep.
