Where to look

Look in the spruce and larch around Flims, Laax and Trin, at 1,000–1,800 m. Larch boletes grow only under larch, cep under spruce in moss. In the mountains mushrooms often appear at higher elevations before lower ones.

What grows here

penny bun / cep (prawdziwek), chanterelle (kurka), orange birch bolete (koźlarz czerwony), larch bolete (maślak żółty), saffron milk cap (rydz)

Forest: mountain spruce and larch forest

Season: July–October; peak in August and September.

Rules

In Graubünden there is a closed period from the 1st to the 10th of every month when picking is not allowed. The limit is 2 kg per person per day, and groups of more than 3 people are banned (families are exempt). Picking is banned in the Swiss National Park and in reserves, and you can have your mushrooms checked at a mushroom control point (Pilzkontrolle), free in many municipalities.

About the forest

Graubünden is the largest Swiss canton, with large spruce and larch forests in the Rhine valleys. The area around Flims and Laax has plenty of forest on gentle slopes. The canton has some of the strictest picking rules in Switzerland.
