Where to look

Look in the spruce forests around Bedřichov and Josefův Důl and along the forest roads on the plateau. Cep and bay boletes grow in older stands with moss, and birch boletes by birches at the edge of the bogs. The beech slopes mostly give honey fungus in autumn.

What grows here

penny bun / cep (prawdziwek), bay bolete (podgrzybek brunatny), orange birch bolete (koźlarz czerwony), slippery jack (maślak zwyczajny), honey fungus (opieńka miodowa)

Forest: mountain spruce forest, beech on the slopes and peat bogs

Season: July–October; peak in August and September.

Rules

The whole area is the Jizerské hory Protected Landscape Area (CHKO), where picking for personal use is allowed. In nature reserves such as Jizerskohorské bučiny and on the bogs you must stay on the paths and must not pick. Selling mushrooms from someone else's forest is banned in Czechia.

About the forest

The Czech part of the Jizera Mountains lies right by the Polish border, above Liberec and Jablonec. The ridges are covered by spruce forest replanted after the acid rain damage. There are plenty of mushrooms and it is a short drive from Lower Silesia.
