Where to look

Look in beech and oak around the Pezinská Baba pass and along forest roads on the ridge. Summer cep grows in summer under oak and beech, hazel boletes under hornbeam. At weekends the forest near Bratislava is heavily searched.

What grows here

penny bun / cep (prawdziwek), summer cep (borowik usiatkowany), chanterelle (kurka), hazel bolete (koźlarz grabowy), parasol (czubajka kania)

Forest: beech, oak and hornbeam forest on granite and limestone ridges

Season: June–October; peak in September.

Rules

In Slovakia you may pick mushrooms for your own use. The Malé Karpaty CHKO is mostly at protection level 2, but picking is banned in reserves at levels 4 and 5. Illegal picking in protected areas brings an on-the-spot fine and an administrative penalty.

About the forest

The Little Carpathians run northeast from Bratislava and are the closest mountains to the capital. Beech and oak in the Malé Karpaty Protected Landscape Area (CHKO) give boletes from early summer. It is the busiest mushroom area in western Slovakia.
