See the pre-saleWhere to look
Look in the oak woods and chestnut groves around França, Portelo and Rabal, on forest edges along the roads. Cep grows in autumn under oak and chestnut, saffron milk caps under pine. Much of the land is village common land (baldios) or private.
What grows here
penny bun / cep (prawdziwek), Caesar's mushroom (muchomor cesarski), chanterelle (kurka), saffron milk cap (rydz), parasol (czubajka kania)
Forest: Pyrenean oak woods, chestnut groves and pine plantations
Season: October–November; morels also in spring.
Rules
Portugal has no single national limit, and Montesinho has introduced its own picking rules and fines, which I could not confirm in detail. Before you go, ask the park office (ICNF) in Bragança or the municipality about permits and limits. On private and common land you need the owner's consent.
About the forest
Montesinho Natural Park, north of Bragança, is one of the best mushroom regions in Portugal. Pyrenean oak, chestnut and pine give boletes and Caesar's mushrooms. Mushrooms are an important source of income for the local villages.
