Where to look

Look in the spruce and larch on the slopes above Sarentino (Sarnthein) and Astfeld, at 1,200–1,900 m. Larch boletes grow under larch, cep under spruce in moss. After summer storms mushrooms appear quickly on the higher slopes.

What grows here

penny bun / cep (prawdziwek), chanterelle (kurka), orange birch bolete (koźlarz czerwony), larch bolete (maślak żółty), saffron milk cap (rydz)

Forest: mountain spruce, larch and Swiss stone pine forest

Season: July–October; peak in August and September.

Rules

In South Tyrol (Provincial Act no. 18/1991) picking is allowed only on even-numbered days from 7:00 to 19:00, at most 1 kg per person over 14 per day. People who do not live in the municipality must first pay a fee to the municipality where they pick and carry the receipt and ID. Picking is currently banned outright in Karneid, Tiers and Welschnofen and on the Kohlern.

About the forest

The Sarntal is a long valley north of Bolzano, ringed by the Sarntal Alps. Spruce, larch and Swiss stone pine cover the slopes. It is one of the most forested valleys in South Tyrol.
