Where to look

Look in the forests around Ljungby and Älmhult, in mixed stands of pine, spruce and birch. Chanterelles grow in moss by birches, winter chanterelles in damp spruce in late autumn. Spots near bogs and streams are good.

What grows here

chanterelle (kurka), winter chanterelle (pieprznik trąbkowy), penny bun / cep (prawdziwek), hedgehog mushroom (kolczak obłączasty), orange birch bolete (koźlarz czerwony)

Forest: pine and spruce forest with birch among lakes and bogs

Season: July–October; winter chanterelles into November.

Rules

Allemansrätten lets you pick mushrooms on private land too, with no quantity limit, but you must not enter gardens or damage crops. Nature reserves can ban picking, so read the signs at the entrance. Leave protected species alone.

About the forest

Småland in southern Sweden is a land of conifer forest, lakes and stony fields. Swedes go here mainly for chanterelles and winter chanterelles. Thanks to the right of public access (allemansrätten) the forest is open almost everywhere.
