Where to look

Look in mixed forest along the roads from Kaluđerske Bare and Mitrovac, outside the strict protection zones. Cep grows in fir and beech, chanterelles in moss on forest edges. Bears live in the park, so make noise and do not leave food out.

What grows here

penny bun / cep (prawdziwek), chanterelle (kurka), saffron milk cap (rydz), honey fungus (opieńka miodowa), parasol (czubajka kania)

Forest: fir, spruce and beech forest with the endemic Serbian spruce

Season: July–October; peak in September.

Rules

In Serbia picking controlled mushroom species for sale needs a permit from the environment ministry, and rules for small personal amounts are not clearly published. In Tara National Park all use is banned in level I protection zones, and elsewhere picking is regulated by the park authority. Ask at the visitor centre in Kaluđerske Bare before you go.

About the forest

Tara in western Serbia is a forested plateau above the Drina canyon, within Tara National Park. Its fir, spruce and beech forests are well preserved and include the endemic Serbian spruce. Mushrooms are an important income for the surrounding villages.
