Rules
Friuli Venezia Giulia requires a permit: visitors can buy a daily permit for about 10 euro, and an annual permit for the whole region costs 60 euro and needs an exam. The limit is 3 kg per person per day. Picking is banned or restricted in nature reserves, parks and biotopes, so check the map on the regional website.
About the forest
The Tarvisio Forest, where Italy, Austria and Slovenia meet, is the largest state forest in Italy. Mountain spruce and beech in the Julian and Carnic Alps give mushrooms from July. From southern Poland you reach it through Austria.
