Where to look

Look in the spruce and mixed forest on the Haanja hills and in pine forest on sand around Võru. Chanterelles grow in moss by birches, cep in older spruce. The valleys between the hills are damper and hold water longer.

What grows here

chanterelle (kurka), penny bun / cep (prawdziwek), orange birch bolete (koźlarz czerwony), saffron milk cap (rydz), winter chanterelle (pieprznik trąbkowy)

Forest: spruce, pine and mixed forest among the Haanja hills

Season: July–October; peak in August and September.

Rules

Estonia's everyman's right (igaüheõigus) lets you pick mushrooms in state forests and on unmarked private land during the day. On fenced or marked private land you need the owner's permission. Protected areas can have restrictions, so check with the Environmental Board (Keskkonnaamet).

About the forest

Võrumaa in southeast Estonia is a hilly land of forests and lakes around the Haanja hills and Suur Munamägi. The forests are more varied than in the north of the country. Estonians pick mainly chanterelles and cep.
