Where to look

Look in the spruce forests around Weitra, Gmünd and the Nebelstein. Cep grows in moss under spruce, chanterelles in pine forest with bilberry. Granite soils dry quickly, so go a few days after heavy rain.

What grows here

penny bun / cep (prawdziwek), chanterelle (kurka), bay bolete (podgrzybek brunatny), parasol (czubajka kania), orange birch bolete (koźlarz czerwony)

Forest: spruce and pine forest on a granite upland

Season: July–October; peak in August and September.

Rules

The Austrian Forest Act (Forstgesetz) allows at most 2 kg of mushrooms per person per day, and going over is an administrative offence. The forest owner can ban or restrict picking, and that ban takes precedence. Organised mushroom-picking events are banned.

About the forest

The Waldviertel is an upland in northwest Lower Austria, by the Czech border. Large spruce and pine forests grow on granite. In Austria the region is known for cep and chanterelles.
