Where to look

Look in older mixed woodland around Roundwood and Djouce Woods and on the edges of pine plantations. Chanterelles grow in moss under birch and beech, cep on the edges of older stands. The oakwoods in Wicklow Mountains National Park are best just looked at.

What grows here

chanterelle (kurka), penny bun / cep (prawdziwek), winter chanterelle (pieprznik trąbkowy), hedgehog mushroom (kolczak obłączasty), parasol (czubajka kania)

Forest: Coillte pine and spruce plantations, old oakwoods in the valleys

Season: August–November; peak in September and October.

Rules

On Coillte land you can walk without a permit, and other activities need one. The rules for mushroom picking are not clearly stated, so take only small amounts for your own use or ask Coillte. Do not pick in Wicklow Mountains National Park or nature reserves without NPWS permission.

About the forest

The Wicklow Mountains south of Dublin are the largest block of upland forest in eastern Ireland. The state company Coillte runs conifer plantations here, and old oakwoods grow in the valleys. The damp climate gives a long season.
