Where to look

Look in birch and pine forest around Äkäslompolo and at the foot of Ylläs fell, along the hiking trails. Birch boletes grow under birch, cep in drier pine forest with reindeer lichen. It is easy to get lost in uniform forest, so carry a map and a charged phone.

What grows here

orange birch bolete (koźlarz czerwony), penny bun / cep (prawdziwek), chanterelle (kurka), saffron milk cap (rydz), hedgehog mushroom (kolczak obłączasty)

Forest: northern pine and spruce taiga and subarctic birch forest below the fells

Season: July–September; peak in August.

Rules

Everyman's right (jokamiehenoikeudet) lets you pick mushrooms without the owner's consent and with no limit. Picking is usually allowed in Pallas-Yllästunturi National Park, but check closed zones on luontoon.fi. Do not disturb the reindeer grazing in the forest.

About the forest

Ylläs in Finnish Lapland is a fell area on the edge of Pallas-Yllästunturi National Park, north of the Arctic Circle. A short, intense season in August gives plenty of birch boletes and cep in birch and pine forest. Mushroom picking goes together with berries and cloudberries here.
