Where to look

Search the flat shelves around the lighthouse at low water. You will see crinoids and other fossils in the rock; leave them in place.

What you can find

crabs, anemones, starfish, limpets, fossil crinoids, seaweeds

What to do: rockpooling, wildlife watching

Shellfish and sanitary status: Do not gather shellfish to eat here without checking the SFPA classification and the Marine Institute biotoxin results. Nobody tests shellfish on an unclassified shore.

Rules and safety

Some waves here come in much bigger than the rest, even in fine weather. Keep away from the edge of the shelves in a southerly or westerly swell. Check the tide.

About the place

Hook Head is a flat limestone headland with one of the oldest working lighthouses in the world. At low tide the rocks expose rock pools and Carboniferous fossils.
