Where to look

Take the steps down at Hope Gap at low water and walk on the platform, not through the pools. Chalk is slippery, so wear shoes with a good grip.

What you can find

crabs, anemones, starfish, gobies, seaweeds, limpets

What to do: rockpooling, wildlife watching

Shellfish and sanitary status: The Seaford Head reserve does not allow foraging, so collect nothing here. The shore lies in the Beachy Head West MCZ.

Rules and safety

Seaford Head is a Sussex Wildlife Trust reserve with no foraging or flower picking. The chalk cliffs often collapse: do not stand below them. Check high water, because the sea reaches the foot of the cliff.

About the place

Hope Gap is a way down to the beach below the chalk cliffs of Seaford Head. Low tide uncovers a chalk platform with rock pools. A chalk intertidal shore this large is rare.
