See the pre-saleWhere to look
Book a walk with a licensed guide. Wellies or high socks are fine for short routes near the dike; for longer walks the guide will tell you what you need.
What you can find
cockles, mussels, crabs, shrimps, lugworms, seals
What to do: mudflat walking, wildlife watching
Shellfish and sanitary status: On a mudflat walk, take nothing without the guide's say-so. The Wadden Sea is a national park; check the Dutch rules on shellfish gathering with the authorities.
Rules and safety
In the Netherlands you may only walk the mudflats with the right licence or under a licensed guide, and only on recognised routes. The tide and fog are dangerous here. Do not go alone.
About the place
Pieterburen is the centre of wadlopen, walking across the Wadden Sea floor at low tide. Guided walks start here, including walks to the islands. The Wadden Sea is a UNESCO World Heritage site.
