Where to look

Go down the slipway in the village and walk the scars north or south at low water. The richest life is on the lower shore, which only shows on big low tides.

What you can find

crabs, anemones, starfish, hermit crabs, gobies, kelp, wracks

What to do: rockpooling, wildlife watching

Shellfish and sanitary status: Collecting shellfish for your own use is generally possible in England, but this shore is protected, so stick to looking. Before eating any shellfish, check the FSA classification and the North Eastern IFCA rules.

Rules and safety

The incoming tide cuts people off below the cliffs here, and rescues happen every year. Head back before the tide turns and always check the tide tables. The shore is protected (SSSI and a marine zone), so look in place and put stones back.

About the place

Robin Hood's Bay has wide rock ridges, the scars, that run far out to sea at low tide. Rock pools lie between them, and the rocks hold Jurassic fossils. It is a popular rockpooling spot in northern England.

Do not miss the next window

The best windows last a few hours: after a storm, after rain, on a clear night with an active Sun. Sign up and we will email you when the index at your spots goes above 60.
