Where to look

Search the rocks between the harbour and the beaches west of town on a big tide coefficient (above 90). Go out an hour before low water and head back soon after it.

What you can find

crabs, anemones, starfish, sea snails, kelp, sea lettuce, dulse

What to do: rockpooling, seaweed, mussels, wildlife watching

Shellfish and sanitary status: Gathering for your own use is allowed within sizes and limits (in Finistère, for example, mussels from 4 cm, up to 3 kg a day). Check the sanitary status of the site before you go on pecheapied-responsable.fr (ARS Bretagne).

Rules and safety

France has national minimum sizes plus limits and bans set by the prefect. Do not fish in seagrass beds or within 15 m of shellfish farm concessions. Your catch must not be sold.

About the place

Roscoff lies on the north coast of Finistère, where low tide uncovers wide fields of rock. A marine biology station has worked here since the 19th century because shore life is so rich. Brittany is also a seaweed harvesting region.
