Where to look

Choose a walk with a national park guide or Schutzstation Wattenmeer. The guide will show you lugworms, crabs and shellfish in the mud, then put them back.

What you can find

cockles, lugworms, crabs, shrimps, waders

What to do: mudflat walking, wildlife watching

Shellfish and sanitary status: Fishing for cockles and razor clams has been banned in the national park since 1990, and Sylt oysters come from a licensed farm. Do not take anything to eat without checking the park rules.

Rules and safety

In zone 1 of the park you may only walk on the flats next to the shore and on guided walk routes. Tide and fog are dangerous, so do not go far alone. Check the BSH tide tables.

About the place

Keitum lies on the eastern, Wadden side of Sylt. Guided walks across the Wadden Sea floor at low tide start here. The whole area belongs to the Schleswig-Holstein Wadden Sea National Park.
