Where to look

Look for wild garlic in damp woodland on the valley floor, where it forms dense patches, and check every leaf, because lords-and-ladies grows there too. You can pick bilberries in summer on the heath above the woods. Nettle, elder and garlic mustard grow by walls and paths at the edge of villages.

What grows here

wild garlic (ramsons), stinging nettle, elder (elderflower, elderberry), bilberry, wood sorrel, common sorrel, common chickweed, garlic mustard, meadowsweet, dandelion, ground elder

Habitats: damp Atlantic oak woods with wild garlic, heath with bilberry, valley meadows and riverside scrub

Rules

In England and Wales you may pick leaves, flowers and fruit of wild plants, but uprooting without the landowner's permission is an offence (Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981, s. 13). Picking for sale without the owner's consent can be theft (Theft Act 1968, s. 4(3)). National Nature Reserves (NNR) and SSSIs have extra restrictions, and land managers such as the National Trust and Natural Resources Wales have their own foraging rules.

About the place

The area around Betws-y-Coed in Eryri National Park is damp oak woodland along the Conwy and Llugwy rivers. The mild oceanic climate brings wild garlic up as early as March. Higher up there is heath with bilberry (llus in Welsh).
