Where to look

Look for wild thyme and wild marjoram on dry, sunny slopes above Jaworki, and for yarrow and sorrel in meadows in the Grajcarek valley. Juniper and dog rose grow on overgrown pastures. Stay off meadows before haymaking, as they are private land.

What grows here

wild thyme (breckland thyme), wild marjoram (oregano), yarrow, common juniper, dog rose (rosehip), elder (elderflower, elderberry), stinging nettle, common sorrel, wild strawberry, dandelion

Habitats: flower-rich meadows and pastures on limestone, blackthorn and dog rose scrub, beech woods on the slopes

Rules

Picking plants is banned in Pieniny National Park and in the Wąwóz Homole and Biała Woda nature reserves. Most meadows are private land, so ask the owner and do not trample grass before mowing. In Lesser Poland, wild garlic may only be harvested with a permit from RDOŚ in Kraków.

About the place

The area around Jaworki and Szlachtowa is meadows and pastures on limestone, still grazed by sheep. Warmth-loving herbs such as wild thyme and wild marjoram grow on this ground. It lies outside Pieniny National Park.
