Where to look

You can pick dandelion, sorrel and yarrow in meadows around Neustift, but only at the edges and after asking the farmer. Bilberries, juniper and wild thyme grow along trails on pastures above the forest. Nettle and elder keep to buildings and barns.

What grows here

common juniper, bilberry, wild thyme (breckland thyme), yarrow, stinging nettle, dandelion, common sorrel, wild strawberry, elder (elderflower, elderberry), wild marjoram (oregano)

Habitats: alpine hay meadows and summer pastures, spruce and larch forest, juniper and bilberry scrub in the dwarf pine zone

Rules

In Austria fruit and plants belong to the landowner (§ 405 ABGB), and picking for personal use is usually tolerated unless a sign bans it. The Forest Act (Forstgesetz) limits mushrooms to 2 kg per person per day, and protected species in Tyrol are listed in the Tiroler Naturschutzverordnung. Stay off uncut meadows, as they supply hay for the farms.

About the place

The Stubai Valley near Innsbruck combines hay meadows on the valley floor with summer pastures and larch forest on the slopes. Meadows flower from May at the bottom to August on the high pastures. The season climbs the slopes with the melting snow.
