Where to watch

Start at the Show Reserve on the road from Białowieża to Hajnówka. Look for free bison at dawn on the meadows around the villages, for example near Teremiski and Budy, from the road or the verge. Binoculars and patience give more than driving from clearing to clearing.

What you can see

European bison, red deer, moose, wolf (rarely seen)

Best time: December to March, dawn and dusk

Rules

The European bison is strictly protected, and deliberate scaring or disturbance is banned by the regulation issued under Article 52 of the Polish Nature Conservation Act. Białowieża National Park asks visitors to keep at least 50 m away, and in autumn 2025 a bison injured a tourist in Teremiski. You can enter the Strict Protection Area only with a guide, do not put out hay or feed, and do not fly a drone.

About the place

Białowieża Forest holds the largest population of European bison in the world. In the Show Reserve of Białowieża National Park you can see bison in any season, and free herds are easiest to find in winter. Then the animals come out onto meadows and to feeding sites at the forest edge.

Do not miss the next window
