Where to watch

Listen to the rut from roads and meadow edges at dawn and just after dark, ideally on a calm and clear day. Do not walk towards the stags, stand in one place and wait. Look for bison from far away on the valley meadows, and look for bears only from public places and from your car.

What you can see

red deer (rut), European bison, brown bear, wolf

Best time: second half of September to early October, dawn and dusk

Rules

In Bieszczady National Park you walk only on marked trails (Article 15 of the Nature Conservation Act), and drone flights are banned because the park lies in restricted zone EP R10. Do not enter forest where a sign says entry is banned, and remember that hunting goes on in autumn, so wear bright clothing. Do not look for or feed bears, keep food sealed and leave no scraps.

About the place

Muczne lies in the San valley, outside Bieszczady National Park, on State Forests land. In autumn the red deer rut takes place on the clearings around it, and the roaring carries far on cold mornings. Free bison, bears and wolves also live in the area.

Do not miss the next window

The best windows last a few hours: after a storm, after rain, on a clear night with an active Sun. Sign up and we will email you when the index at your spots goes above 60.
