See the pre-saleWhere to watch
From Glenmore, join a hill trip to the reindeer herd with the Cairngorm Reindeer Centre. The rut can be heard at dawn and dusk at the edges of glens and moorland, for example in Glen Feshie. Watch from far away with binoculars and stay in one place.
What you can see
red deer (rut), reindeer, osprey, western capercaillie
Best time: late September to October, dawn and dusk
Rules
The Scottish Outdoor Access Code gives you a right of access but asks you not to disturb animals. Capercaillie are protected under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981, so do not look for leks and keep to paths in the forests from March to August. In autumn estates stalk red deer, so read the signs on paths and ask locally where stalking is taking place that day.
About the place
Cairngorms National Park is the largest national park in the UK. In autumn the red deer rut fills the glens, and Glenmore is home to the country's only free-ranging reindeer herd. In summer ospreys fish over the lochs.
