Where to watch

Arrive before dawn and stop at signed pull-outs by the road, for example near Lamar Buffalo Ranch. Wolves are easiest to spot in winter against the snow, through a spotting scope. When people with scopes are standing at a pull-out, ask them what they see.

What you can see

grey wolf, American bison, grizzly bear, elk

Best time: December to March and May, dawn

Rules

Stay at least 100 yards (91 m) from bears and wolves and 25 yards (23 m) from bison, elk and other animals. Feeding wildlife is prohibited, and drones are banned in all US national parks. Do not stand in the road and do not leave your car in the traffic lane.

About the place

Lamar Valley in northern Yellowstone National Park is sometimes called the Serengeti of America. It is the best place in the park to watch wolves, and bison herds graze in the valley. The road through the valley is open all year.
