Where to look

Look in spruce and mixed forest around Arieșeni and Gârda de Sus, on the edges of clearings and forest roads. Chanterelles grow in moss under spruce and beech, saffron milk caps in younger spruce. Watch for sinkholes and steep drops.

What grows here

penny bun / cep (prawdziwek), chanterelle (kurka), saffron milk cap (rydz), honey fungus (opieńka miodowa), parasol (czubajka kania)

Forest: spruce and beech on a karst massif

Season: July–October; peak in August and September.

Rules

In Romania picking forest products, including mushrooms, needs the consent of the forest district (ocol silvic) or the owner, and picking without it brings fines of 500–5,000 lei and confiscation. Ask the local forest district about a permit and the amount allowed for your own use. Picking is banned in the strict protection zones of Apuseni Natural Park.

About the forest

The Apuseni Mountains in western Romania are a karst massif with caves, much of it within Apuseni Natural Park. Spruce and beech give big flushes of chanterelles, cep and saffron milk caps. Villagers sell mushrooms by the roads all summer.
