Look in older fir and spruce along the forest roads around the Sapin Président. Chanterelles and hedgehogs grow in moss, black trumpets in damp hollows under beech. Morels appear in spring on forest edges and felling sites.
What grows here
penny bun / cep (prawdziwek), chanterelle (kurka), black trumpet (lejkowiec dęty), hedgehog mushroom (kolczak obłączasty), morel (smardz)
Forest: mountain fir and spruce forest on limestone
Season: July–October; morels in April and May.
Rules
A 1993 order of the Jura prefect limits picking to 2 kg per person per day and bans rakes and other tools that tear up the litter. Picking is banned all year in hunting reserves in state forests, and from 1 March to 30 June in communal ones. Breaches bring a 4th class fine and confiscation.
About the forest
The Forêt de la Joux near Champagnole is one of the most famous fir forests in France, a state forest (forêt domaniale) in the Jura mountains. Limestone and a cool, damp climate favour mushrooms from summer to autumn. In spring morels are also picked in the Jura.
