See the pre-saleWhere to look
Look in beech around Mátraháza and Galyatető, along forest roads and trails. Cep and chanterelles grow in beech on the higher slopes, summer cep in oak lower down. Pick Caesar's mushroom only with certain identification, as young ones are easy to confuse with poisonous amanitas.
What grows here
penny bun / cep (prawdziwek), summer cep (borowik usiatkowany), chanterelle (kurka), Caesar's mushroom (muchomor cesarski), parasol (czubajka kania)
Forest: beech, oak and hornbeam forest on a volcanic range
Season: June–October; peak in September.
Rules
Hungary's 2009 forest act lets you pick up to 2 kg of mushrooms per person per day without a permit in unprotected state forests, for your own use only, and larger amounts need the forest manager's consent. Part of the range is the Mátra Protected Landscape Area, where picking can be banned in strictly protected zones. Check with the forest manager or the Bükk National Park Directorate, which oversees the area.
About the forest
The Mátra is the highest range in Hungary, with Kékes (1,014 m), covered with beech and oak. It is under two hours' drive from Budapest and a popular mushroom area. Warm oak woods on the lower slopes also give Caesar's mushroom.
