See the pre-saleWhere to look
Look in beech and mixed forest around Meymac, Bugeat and Peyrelevade, especially on the edges of older stands. Cep grows under beech and oak, bay boletes under conifers. Keep off the bogs, many of which are protected.
What grows here
penny bun / cep (prawdziwek), chanterelle (kurka), bay bolete (podgrzybek brunatny), hedgehog mushroom (kolczak obłączasty), parasol (czubajka kania)
Forest: Douglas fir and spruce plantations, beech woods and bogs on a granite plateau
Season: August–November; peak in September and October.
Rules
In France mushrooms belong to the landowner, and most of the forest on the plateau is private, so you need consent. In public forests picking for your own use is tolerated, and the prefect can set a limit for the department. Picking can be banned in nature reserves and on protected bogs.
About the forest
The Millevaches plateau in Limousin is a high, cool land of forest, bogs and heath, covered by a regional nature park. It was heavily planted with conifers in the 20th century, and old beech woods remain between the plantations. Limousin is known in France for plenty of boletes.
