See the pre-saleWhere to look
Look for bilberries on forest edges and along trails on the ridges, and for wood sorrel in damp fir woods. Meadows in the Murg valley near Forbach give meadow herbs. Elder and nettle grow by farmsteads, but ask the farmers there.
What grows here
bilberry, wood sorrel, stinging nettle, elder (elderflower, elderberry), yarrow, dandelion, common sorrel, wild strawberry, dog rose (rosehip), meadowsweet, white dead-nettle
Habitats: mountain spruce and fir forest with bilberry, meadows and pastures in the valleys, heath on the ridges
Rules
In Germany anyone may pick wild herbs, fruit and flowers in small amounts for personal use, where entry is not banned (§ 39(3) BNatSchG, the handful rule). Picking for sale needs a permit from the nature conservation authority (§ 39(4)). Black Forest National Park and nature reserves (Naturschutzgebiet) have picking bans, and protected species such as arnica are excluded.
About the place
The northern Black Forest around Baiersbronn is dense spruce and fir forest on acidic ground. Bilberry and wood sorrel grow under the trees, and valley meadows give yarrow, sorrel and dandelion. Wild garlic grows more often on richer limestone soils outside the range.
